American Venous Forum

The American Venous Forum (AVF) was established in 1988 as a not-for-profit medical society to improve the care of patients with venous and lymphatic disorders. The forum is dedicated to the clinical practice, education and exchange of information concerning basic and clinical research of the venous and lymphatic systems. The AVF, which is comprised of an international consortium of physicians interested in the care of patients with venous and lymphatic diseases, accomplishes its mission through:

• Initiatives that advance clinical and basic science research

• Educational programs for physicians and Fellows

• Patient awareness and screenings

Benefits of Membership

"I am so grateful for the opportunities the American Venous Forum has provided me as a resident in training. As the recipient of the 2009 Jobst Award, I not only became a better scientist, but was welcomed into a community of friends that help cultivate my lifelong career as a future vascular surgeon."

Online Membership Process

The membership process takes a full year to complete. Applications are considered every year, with an October 31st deadline. The application for each type of membership is available to the left.

Complete the appropriate online application and submit it with your CV and letter of interest.

Applications are reviewed by the AVF Membership Committee and the Executive Council. The membership votes on potential members during the Annual Member Business Meeting in February. Applicants are then notified by letter in early March.

New members are introduced during the following year’s Member Business Meeting, where the official Member Certificate is conveyed.

Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the American Venous Forum has been a mainstay of AVF programming since the inception of the organization. The Annual Meeting brings together internationally recognized authorities on all aspects of venous disease, diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment. In addition, researchers' most recent work leading to improved understanding of these topics is presented and discussed.

The objective of this comprehensive meeting is to provide those attending with knowledge of current thinking in effective clinical management of venous disease and insight into the future directions from critical analysis of investigative findings.

"I joined the AVF to interact with vascular surgeons who are dedicated to the treatment of patients with venous disease. As an IR, I began presenting my endovascular experience in 1995 and found that it was met with great interest and respect. I encourage all interventional radiologists doing venous work to join the AVF."

AVF Programs and Projects

A multi-discipline, international medical society, the AVF spearheads many innovative initiatives designed to further its goals and advance the mission. These include:

Medical Education Programs such as the Attending Physicians Course and the Vascular Fellows Education, a complete curriculum that addresses the need for more venous education during vascular training.

American Venous Registry, the first registry that identifies practice patterns for venous disease diagnosis and treatment across the country.

National Venous Screening Program, which provides public and professional education. It is the nation’s only dedicated non-profit venous screening effort.

Handbook of Venous Disorders, authored by AVF members and edited by Peter Gloviczki, include all essential information on proven therapies, new techniques and technologies, and new developments in the field. These handbooks are "the" quintessential references for physicians treating venous disease.

Evidence-Based Venous Practice Guidelines, which provide validated, objective outcome measures based on the revised Venous Clinical Severity Scoring System.

Layman’s Handbook of Venous Disease, which provides essential information on the cause, presentation and management of venous disease for the general public in language that is easy-to-understand.

The American Venous Forum mission: To promote venous and lymphatic health through innovative research, education and
technology.
